WATCH: Bill Maher has very surprising reaction to the Laura Ingraham ad boycott — and it's a shocker

Liberal comedian Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time," made a surprising defense of Laura Ingraham on his show Friday night, saying the recent boycott of Ingraham's show is not American.

Liberal activist David Hogg, with the support of Media Matters, orchestrated a boycott of Ingraham's show last week after she tweeted a story explaining how Hogg was rejected from several colleges. More than a dozen companies that advertised on Ingraham's Fox show caved to the outrage mob and either dropped her or distanced themselves from her.

What did Maher say?

"I want to defend Laura Ingraham," Maher began. "I know that sounds ridiculous but it has to do with Parkland kids, guns and free speech."

Maher said he wishes the students success because they've brought more attention to the gun control issue, but explained that because the kids put themselves in the "public arena," people have the "right to argue back."

As Maher was explaining the situation, noting that Hogg called for a boycott of Ingraham's sponsors, some members of the audience began to clap and cheer. Then Maher snapped.

"Really?! Is that American? And [Hogg] complains about bullying? THAT's bullying!" Maher exclaimed.

"I have been the victim of a boycott...I lost a job once, it is wrong. You shouldn't do this by team, you should do it by principle," he added.

To no surprise, Maher's panel of liberals disagreed with him, bashed Fox News as a "propaganda machine" and celebrated the Ingraham boycott.
