Anti-oil activists drenched in water by angry resident after protest blocks highway in UK town

Anti-oil activists were doused with a bucket of water by an angry resident of a United Kingdom neighborhood after the group blocked roads during their march, causing a backlog of traffic and enraged motorists.

The protesters were from the group Just Stop Oil, according to the Daily Mail, and were blocking a busy highway in Camden, England. The six eco-protesters carried signs that read "for my family," "I won't die quietly," and "New oil = murder."

As work vans and trucks honked their horns at the activists, some cars careful drove around the group, sometimes shouting expletives at them.

Another person who shouted curse words was a resident of a nearby building who threw a bucket of water directly on the group from a fourth-floor balcony.

One of the protesters spoke to reporters, and said "I'm 45 years old and the climate crisis has defined the whole of my adult life."

"My heart breaks for how it must feel for young people today to understand what's happening," said Ru Kenyon, a teacher from London.

"If I could speak to the prime minister I'd tell him he needs to get out of the way quite frankly, along with the entire corrupt establishment, and let the young get on with dealing with this crisis," she added. "But he may as well make amends first by announcing the end of all new fossil fuel licenses in this country."

Another activist named Paul Bleach, a gardener and full-time "carer," reportedly said that he is left with little choice other than blocking roads.

"'We are marching in the road because sadly all other forms of dissent are ignored," he said. "Citizens are being denied sufficient information and support by our corrupt government and the media," he continued.

"This is the mother of all humanitarian problems, there is no, and will never be, a bigger crisis. Where the hell is the sense of urgency from global governments?" the gardener asked.

The environmentalist group has become synonymous in the U.K. with blocking people's paths, and in the past, members have glued their hands to precious artwork or even directly to roads.

"Just Stop Oil activists are incredibly hated in the United Kingdom. Not only for their method of protest, which is egregious, annoying and unproductive," said Lewis Brackpool, co-founder of Grit News. "But also the hypocrisy of being paid by oil companies to fund their movement."

Just Stop Oil's inaugural funding reportedly came from Aileen Getty, the granddaughter of Jean Paul Getty, founder of the Getty Oil Company.

"For that reason, they could simply be a product of oil companies playing both sides of the argument," Brackpool added.

Protesters were eventually moved from the road by police, at which point the activists began hugging to celebrate their accomplishments.
