Apartment resident fatally shoots intruder, wounds another after break-in: Police

A Florida apartment resident fired at intruders — fatally shooting one and wounding another — after an early-morning break-in.

What are the details?

West Melbourne police told WESH-TV multiple people, possibly armed, forced their way into a unit at the Reserves at Melbourne apartment complex, after which the unit resident opened fire multiple times.

Several residents told WESH the incident took place around 2 a.m. Sunday and recalled police cars responding.

One of the shot intruders was pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center, the station said, and the other shot intruder showed up at a hospital and was receiving treatment.

WESH said the state attorney’s office referred questions about the shooting to the West Melbourne Police Department, which added to the station that the investigation is ongoing, they're working to determine what led to the home invasion, and they're trying to figure out if there was a relationship between the intruders and the resident.

“God only knows what they were doing," one resident told WESH on camera. "You know, this is a nice development. It’s usually very quiet, and everybody watches out for each other. I hope they do something to make sure it does not happen anymore."

The resident added to the station that “I’m against guns. I think we really need to take a look at it, and we’re not. I just stay at home, stay out of the way."

Others who live in the complex told WESH the incident demonstrates the importance of gun ownership.

West Melbourne police are asking anyone with any information about the incident to please contact them at 321-7230-9673, the station said.
