Beto O'Rourke's CNN town hall tanked as his campaign continues to spiral

Beto O'Rourke's campaign has hit a new low in his attempt to earn the Democratic nomination, as his town hall on CNN was one of the lowest rated out of all the events the network has hosted, according to the Washington Examiner.

O'Rourke, who entered the race as a potential favorite for the nomination despite his inability to beat Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas, only managed 714,000 viewer for his Tuesday night town hall.

The only CNN town hall that drew fewer viewers than O'Rourke's was Marianne Williamson's. Williamson is an activist who is nominally running for president. Even Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper had a higher rated town hall.

O'Rourke's town hall was on at the same time as "The Ingraham Angle" on Fox News and "Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" on MSNBC, and trailed both shows in ratings.

While CNN claims it doesn't do town halls for ratings, the number is surely disappointing for O'Rourke, who is scrambling to make up for the fact that he spent months shunning national media in order to campaign at small town hall events around the country.

O'Rourke is polling so poorly nowadays that Tina Nguyen of Vanity Fair reported that people aren't even bothering to seek opposition research on him anymore. The implication here being: There's no need to attack O'Rourke anymore, as he doesn't appear to be a threat to anyone. Nguyen writes:

Instead, after two months on the presidential campaign trail, O'Rourke seems to be little danger to Biden, let alone Trump, judging by the number of people not looking to take O'Rourke down. "The requests for oppo on him have completely died off," a staffer at America Rising, a Republican PAC that does opposition research on Democratic candidates, told the Daily Beast. Requests to the R.N.C. for damaging information on Beto have similarly dried up. Even Fox News appears largely disinterested.

A new Hill-HarrisX poll has O'Rourke at 5 percent, while frontrunners Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are at 33 and 14 percent, respectively.
