The whistleblower whose complaint led to the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump is reportedly a registered Democrat, according to a report by CNN on Thursday.
"The Lead" anchor Jake Tapper announced the report was based on an anonymous source.
"A source familiar with the whistleblower investigation tells me that the political bias referred to by the intelligence community Inspector General is that the whistleblower is a registered Democrat," Tapper reported.
Allies of the president on social media responded to the report by concluding that the whistleblower was motivated by political animus against Republicans and the president's agenda.
The impeachment inquiry by House Democrats commenced on the basis of accusations stemming from the complaint by a whistleblower who claimed Trump acted inappropriately in a phone call with the Ukrainian president.
Trump and his supporters have accused Democrats of using the accusations in order to defend Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden from claims of corruption.
Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal attorney, has claimed that he is the true whistleblower, because he uncovered the alleged corruption committed by Biden to defend his son, Hunter Biden.
