Will Democrats listen? David Axelrod is trying to warn his party that removing Trump from ballot will backfire

David Axelrod is warning Democrats that yanking Donald Trump from ballots could end up bringing disaster on the Democratic Party.

Last month, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump is constitutionally disqualified from the presidency, leading Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) to make the same conclusion single-handedly. While the Supreme Court will likely get the final say in Trump's eligibility, Axelrod explained on CNN last Friday why removing Trump from ballots is not the right decision.

"I have very, very strong reservations about all of this," Axelrod revealed.

"I do think it would rip the country apart if he were actually prevented from running because tens of millions of people want to vote for him," he predicted. "I think if you are going to beat Donald Trump, you are going to have to do it at the polls."

Axelrod, after all — by leading Barack Obama's two successful presidential campaigns — has proved that he understands how to gauge the pulse of voters. And it is that very knowledge of the electorate that underlies his concerns about taking punitive actions against Trump rather than allowing voters to decide for themselves.

According to Axelrod, the decisions in Colorado and Maine are the "most blatant examples" suggesting that government officials are actively trying to thwart Trump.

"All of this is strengthening him in the Republican primary," he warned. "We have run this experiment. You know, he's only gained since he started getting indicted. What you thought might be kryptonite for him has been battery packs. This is a big one for him."

Axelrod is not the only Democrat fearful that removing Trump from ballots will backfire.

After the Colorado decision, Democratic officials in the Biden administration and Biden campaign expressed fear that such action will undermine President Joe Biden's campaign message that Trump is an existential threat to democracy.

That message is hard to sell when Trump is the one being removed from ballots by Democrats and Democratic-appointed justices.
