FBI seizes phones and iPad from NYC Mayor Eric Adams amid fundraising investigation

The FBI reportedly took up phones and an iPad that belong to New York City Mayor Eric Adams after an investigation was kicked off earlier this month, seeking details concerning the mayor's political fundraising during his 2021 campaign.

The authorities seized the tech as Adams was departing from a public event in Manhattan, according to a statement made by Boyd Johnson, Adams' attorney in the case. Blaze News reported earlier this month that an investigation had been launched after Adams allegedly accepted foreign donations during his 2021 political campaign.

"On Monday night, the FBI approached the mayor after an event. The Mayor immediately complied with the FBI’s request and provided them with electronic devices,” Johnson said. “The mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and continues to cooperate with the investigation.”

The latest move in the investigation comes after Adams' top campaign fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, had her Brooklyn home searched earlier this month. According to Suggs' LinkedIn profile, she was a "Fundraiser and Director of Logistics" for the mayor's campaign, from 2019 to 2021. She apparently raised more than $18 million for Adams' campaign.

Despite the investigation, Adams insists that he has "nothing to hide," according to the Associated Press.

“As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation — and I will continue to do exactly that,” Adams said, who is a former police captain.

During his talk with reporters on Wednesday, Adams said that he was not aware of any wrongdoing by anyone on his campaign team, and that he would be surprised if he learned that anyone acted unethically.

However, on Friday, Adams' attorney made a statement saying they had “discovered that an individual had recently acted improperly.” But the campaign spokesperson did not specifically identify who it was.

“After learning of the federal investigation, it was discovered that an individual had recently acted improperly. In the spirit of transparency and cooperation, this behavior was immediately and proactively reported to investigators,” Johnson said.

The AP noted that U.S. attorney and the FBI both declined to make further comment on the situation.

While the details of the investigation have not been made clear, the New York Times obtained a search warrant which suggested the authorities are looking into whether the Adams campaign conspired with the Turkish government and received donations from foreign sources.

One business that has come into question is Brooklyn-based KSK Construction Group, which apparently has ties to a Turkish hotel chain.
