Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has said that he is "not a progressive," according to NBC News.
"I just think I'm a Democrat that is very committed to choice and other things. But with Israel, I'm going to be on the right side of that. And immigration is something near and dear to me, and I think we do have to effectively address it as well," he said, according to the outlet.
Fetterman has expressed support for Israel's right to eliminate Hamas. "For peace & a 2-state solution, Hamas must be destroyed & I fully support Israel's right to do that," he has noted.
According to Politico, Fetterman has said, "I hope Democrats can understand that it isn’t xenophobic to be concerned about the border."
He has also been calling for Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey to be expelled from office.
Last year, when NBC News' Dasha Burns asked Fetterman if he is a progressive, the candidate answered, "No," describing himself as a Democrat who runs on that which thinks and knows is true. He added that six years prior, it would have been viewed as progressive, but now it's "just where the party is."
But in a 2020 tweet, Fetterman described himself as a "progressive Democrat."
In a video posted on Monday, Fetterman declared that he would do everything within his power to block the planned sale of U.S. Steel to a foreign company. "Steel is always about security," he said, noting that he will "fight for the steelworkers and their union way of life."
Fetterman suffered a stroke last year while running for Senate. He took office in January of this year and later sought treatment for clinical depression.
