Lindsey Graham stops CNN anchor in her tracks, accuses her of 'covering' for pro-abortion Dems: 'It's barbaric'

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) condemned the media on Sunday for "covering" for pro-abortion Democrats in a tense interview with CNN host Dana Bash.

While interviewing Graham on CNN's "State of the Union," Bash asked the South Carolina lawmaker whether abortion is an issue of state rights or whether the federal government should regulate it. He has advocated for both and most recently introduced a bill that would federally outlaw abortion after 15 weeks of gestation.

"It's a human rights issue," Graham told Bash. "Does it really matter where you're conceived?

"At 15 weeks, you have a developed heart and lungs. And to dismember a child at 15 weeks is a painful experience. It's barbaric. It's out of line with the rest of the civilized world. Only North Korea and China allow abortion on demand up to the moment of birth — except the Democratic Party," he continued. "What the Democratic Party proposes on abortion is barbaric — abortion up to the moment of birth, taxpayer-funded."

That's when Bash appeared to defend Democrats, noting that Roe v. Wade permitted abortion up until the moment of fetal "viability."

The response pushes back against Graham's notion that Democrats support "abortion up to the moment of birth," as Graham claimed, because Democrats supported Roe. Graham immediately called out Bash for her response, accusing her of "covering" for pro-abortion Democrats.

"No, no, no. Quit covering for these guys!" he interjected.

"No, no, no, you're media, you keep covering for these guys. They introduced legislation that allowed abortion on demand with taxpayer-funded — you paying for it, the taxpayer — up to the moment of birth. That was their position in Washington. That's the law they want to pass. And nobody in your business will talk about it," Graham continued. "It's barbaric."

In the end, Bash denied carrying water for Democrats.

"Senator, I'm not covering for anybody — and you know that," she told Graham.

Is Graham right?

When Democrats controlled the House in 2021, they passed a bill to codify abortion rights into federal law.

The legislation would not only permit women to abort an unborn child before "fetal viability" for any reason, but it would permit doctors to conduct abortions on unborn children after the "fetal viability" threshold if the doctor determines that "continuation of the pregnancy would pose a risk to the pregnant patient’s life or health." The problem with the language, of course, is what does "health" mean? Just physical health, or does it include mental health, too? The bill itself did not define the word.

Ultimately, the bill was killed in the Senate.

Democrats have reintroduced the bill — the Women's Health Protection Act — in the 118th Congress. It has been referred to committee.

Meanwhile, Democrats generally support overturning the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.
