'Why did you shoot my daddy and me?' Little girl and parents were shot because basketball rolled into gunman's yard, police say

A 6-year-old North Carolina girl was shot during a confrontation with a man who was furious because a basketball rolled into his yard, according to police.

According to police reports, 6-year-old Kinsley White was shot due to an encounter with a man who was upset over an errant basketball rolling into his property.

On Tuesday night, several young children were playing basketball in Gaston County. Around 8 p.m., a man became infuriated when a basketball bounced into his yard, according to local police.

Robert Louis Singletary reportedly ran down a neighborhood street and shot at the children nearby with a gun.

WSOC-TV reported, "William White became worried about his 6-year-old daughter just before Tuesday’s shooting and ran down to protect her. Police said another man was shot at during the incident but was not hurt."

Kinsley was seriously hurt from the shooting, and her father was reportedly critically injured from the attack. Kinsley's mother, Ashley Hilderbrand, was grazed by a bullet during the altercation and is recovering at home.

Kinsley said, "We don’t even know the man."

Hilderbrand claimed, "He looked at my husband and my daughter and told them, ‘I’m going to kill you.'"

Hilderbrand claimed that Singletary kept shooting until he was out of bullets.

Kinsley’s grandmother, Carolyn Hilderbrand, said, "I believe he would have got me and my husband too. He just run out of bullets."

Kinsley reportedly asked her shooter, "Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid’s dad?"

Police have yet to locate the 24-year-old Singletary.

Singletary has multiple warrants for his arrest. He has reportedly been charged with four counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Gaston County police.

The Gaston County Police Department is offering the public a $1,000 reward for information leading to Singletary's arrest.

Police Chief Stephen Zill said in a statement, "I want to say to the people of Gaston County — this sort of violence will not stand."

Local police, as well as the U.S. Marshals, are searching for Singletary.
