NYU hosts 'anti-racist' workshop promoting 'equitable, powerful, multiracial' communities — but seminar only open to 'white public school parents': Report

New York University hosted an "anti-racist" workshop that promoted "building equitable, powerful, multiracial parent communities," but the series was only open to "white public school parents," according to a Washington Free Beacon report published Tuesday.

A now-removed NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development webpage advertised the seminar series, titled "From Integration to Anti-Racist," as a six-month online event beginning in February.

For $360 per person, the workshop covered the "impact of white supremacy" and how to "dismantle racist policies and practices in our schools and communities." Parents were also taught "how internalized white superiority shows up in our actions, relationships, and institutions."

Proceeds were used to cover the workshop's expenses and allocated toward "justice work initiatives."

While the webpage did not explicitly state that the seminar was only for white parents, it noted that the workshop was "designed specifically for white public school parents in New York City."

According to the Washington Free Beacon, before the first session, the event's organizations provided participants with a handout created by the nonprofit Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere titled "Why a White Space." A copy of the handout obtained by the outlet detailed reasons "why we need to meet together as white people."

"This was essential because many participants were either hesitant to talk about their participation outside the group or were being challenged by friends or colleagues about why we would meet together only as white people," the handout stated.

It claimed that "white people need to unlearn racism," which it described as "a long, difficult, and sometimes painful process."

"It's helpful to have a space where other white people engaged in this process can support and challenge us, without having to always subject people of color to further undue trauma or pain as we stumble and make mistakes," the handout added.

The Washington Free Beacon also reported that audio obtained from the first session revealed that one of the instructors reiterated the need for "a white space."

Multiple lawyers told the outlet that the workshop series "almost certainly violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act."

Director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute Ilya Shapiro called the seminar "quintessentially illegal."

Free speech and civil rights attorney Samantha Harris told the Washington Free Beacon, "They are literally running a 'whites only' program in the interest of so-called social justice."

"I find it inconceivable that the people putting these programs together don't see the irony," Harris added.

NYU told the outlet that it would be "reviewing these matters to determine whether they conform to our standards."
