Nancy Pelosi jokes about sending Sec. Mnuchin to jail — and the rest of the Trump admin too

Weren't they outraged over similar jokes that Trump made?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joked that she could send Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to jail if he didn't release President Donald Trump's taxes — then she added the entire administration for good measure.

Pelosi was speaking to Robert Costa of the Washington Post on Wednesday when she made the comments.

"How far can you go on that front, Speaker Pelosi?" Costa asked. "Could you hold the Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin in contempt? Some Democrats have even raised the prospect of arresting the Treasury secretary if he does not comply with congressional demands."

"Well, let me just say," replied Pelosi, "that we do have a jail down in the basement of the Capitol!"

The comment was met with laughter from the audience.

"But if we were arresting all the people in the administration we would have an overcrowded jail situation," she continued, "and I'm not for that!"

Pelosi went on to say that there are many different options and that they are seeking out their next move in order to try to pressure Mnuchin to divulge six years of the president's taxes.

President Trump and his supporters were excoriated by many on the left for chanting "lock her up!" in reference to former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and making other jokes about imprisoning political opponents.

Mnuchin denied the request from congressional Democrats for Trump's taxes in a letter saying that they had provided the "legitimate legislative purpose" for such a request.
