Someone burned rubber on Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag crosswalk — and resulting police probe is thoroughly mocked

Police in Kirkland, Washington, said they're asking for the public’s help in order to identify who's responsible for damaging a Pride flag crosswalk that was unveiled to the community in early June.

What are the details?

Surveillance images of the incident at the entrance of Marina Park at Kirkland Avenue and Lakeshore Plaza were captured around 11:40 p.m. June 20, police said.

The vehicle in question appears to be a white 2010-2022 model Toyota Sequoia with a distinctive roof rack, police said.

Police added that at least two people — who are suspects for the "crimes of reckless driving and malicious mischief" — were in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Kirkland council member Amy Falcone said the new crosswalk, modeled after the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag, "symbolizes the value and beautiful diversity of all LGBTQIA2-S people. Symbols matter, and the installation of this crosswalk is one way that the city is working to create an inclusive and belonging place for all community members."

How are folks reacting?

Some folks reacting to the police department's tweet about the incident are thoroughly mocking the investigation, as well pro-Pride sentiments in general:

  • "Police will put out an APB over a burnout and turn a blind eye to people slinging fentanyl and crapping on the sidewalk," one commenter quipped. "Makes sense."
  • "They said 'we’re loud, proud and coming for your children'…so this is what you get," another user noted. "We heard you. Now eat it."
  • "Seems like they performed a public service," another commenter offered. "Maybe you should give them a reward."
  • "That’s a pretty lame burnout," another user said. "Add lack of smoke to the charges."
  • "If they had painted BLM on it, would it have been good or bad?" another commenter wondered.
  • "To all the officers at that department, aren't you embarrassed that this is what you are wasting resources on?" another user asked. "Seriously. Wake up!!"
  • "I hope not a single soul calls you," another commenter declared.
