Tlaib votes present as House passes resolution condemning Hamas rapes

In a bipartisan, 418-0 vote, the House of Representatives passed a resolution on Wednesday decrying the rapes perpetrated by Hamas terrorists in the October 7 attacks against Israel. But Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan voted present.

The text of the resolution declares, in part, that the House "condemns all rape and forms of sexual violence as weapons of war, including those acts committed by Hamas terrorists on and since October 7th." Another portion of the resolution states that the chamber "calls on all international bodies to unequivocally condemn the barbaric murder, rape, sexual assault, and kidnapping by Hamas and other terrorists on and since October 7th, and hold accountable all perpetrators."

Tlaib said that although the resolution "rightfully denounces any sexual violence by Hamas, I am disturbed that it completely ignores and erases any sexual violence and abuse committed by the Israeli forces against Palestinians, especially children."

"There are numerous well-documented reports of sexual violence, including rape, committed by Israeli forces against Palestinians in their custody," she said.

Last year, the House voted 234-188 to censure Tlaib. Several lawmakers voted present.

She has claimed that "from the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate."

Tlaib has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "Genocidal maniac," "murderer," and "war criminal."

The congresswoman is the "daughter of Palestinian immigrant parents," according to tlaib.house.gov.
