'Somebody's lying': Legal scholar demands Congress act over 'real criminal and impeachable conduct' in Hunter Biden probe

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley urged Congress on Monday to investigate the Justice Department's Hunter Biden probe because "somebody's lying."

Attorney General Merrick Garland insists that U.S. attorney David Weiss, who led the Hunter Biden investigation, was given complete independence to prosecute the first son. At a press conference last Friday, Garland even claimed that Weiss had more prosecutorial authority than a special counsel would have had.

But IRS whistleblowers allege the DOJ slow-walked and repeatedly interfered in the investigation. In fact, one of the whistleblowers alleged while testifying under oath to Congress last month that Weiss told at least six people in a meeting last October that he was not the "deciding official" on filing charges against Hunter Biden, he could not charge outside of Delaware, and he was denied special counsel status.

There is a vast difference in accounts, which Turley said is proof "somebody's lying."

"The different accounts that we’ve have heard about what happened in this investigation cannot be reconciled," he explained on Fox News.

"Somebody's lying, and there is real criminal and impeachable conduct that could be raised and that means Congress' power is at its apex, and they can move forward and it needs to move forward and it has a full array of powers to do that with," he added.

The only way to get to the bottom of the matter, Turley advised, is for Congress to start investigating.

"Congress needs to start bringing people in. There is nothing that constraints the mind as much as a congressional subpoena," he said. "We need to stop the nonsense."

"These whistleblowers have said under the penalty of prosecution that ... there were two attempts to bring charges [against Hunter Biden] that were denied," Turley later added. "Let's find the truth. Let's bring everyone in."

Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is threatening Garland with an impeachment inquiry over the DOJ's handling of the Hunter Biden probe.

"We need to get to the facts, and that includes reconciling these clear disparities. U.S. Attorney David Weiss must provide answers to the House Judiciary Committee," McCarthy said on Saturday.

"If the whistleblowers' allegations are true, this will be a significant part of a larger impeachment inquiry into Merrick Garland's weaponization of DOJ," he added.
