Massive high school student put female teacher in a chokehold and bit administrator on the head, Utah police said

A large student attacked a female teacher at a high school classroom in Utah after an argument about him arriving to class late, according to Salt Lake City police.

"It's really serious," Unified Police Department Sgt. Melody Cutler told KSL-TV. "When you look at the realities of a teacher that's been put in danger, the students even in that classroom were in danger."

Cutler said that the 14-year-old student arrived late to class at Kearns High School and got into an argument with the teacher who then asked him to leave.

"They were arguing, and then the teacher went and picked up his things and tried to escort him out of the room when he grabbed her and put her in a chokehold," Cutler explained.

She said the student weighed about 300 pounds and stood at about 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Cutler said that a school administrator and a school resource officer responded to try to help the teacher, but the student then bit the administrator on the head several times.

"We have the teacher that he put in a chokehold, the administrator that he was biting, and then during the scuffle as they were trying to get control of him, apparently his shoe came off," Cutler said.

The student was then allegedly able to strike the school resource officer across the face with a shoe.

Cutler said no one was seriously injured, but the incident was dangerous as the fight erupted in the classroom with other students in the room.

"You have basically a full-on fight going on in this room full of other students, not to mention the trauma that they experience from having to witness these incidents," she said.

The student was taken to juvenile detention. The student is facing two charges of felony aggravated assault, one charge of misdemeanor assault on a police officer, misdemeanor disorderly conduct, unlawful acts on school grounds, and interfering with an arrest.

The administrator was treated and the teacher is recovering, according to KSL.

Kearns is a suburb of Salt Lake City with about 37,000 residents.
