Republican US House Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana killed in a head-on car crash

A member of the U.S. House of Representatives was killed in a car accident Wednesday afternoon.

The death of Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana was announced by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in statement posted on his social media account.

"It is with heavy heart that I am sharing this statement from the Office of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski," wrote McCarthy.

"Dean Swihart, Jackie's husband, was just informed by the Elkhart County Sheriff's office that Jackie was killed in a car accident this afternoon. She has returned home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," read the statement.

"Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers," it concluded.

CBS News reported that three others were killed in the accident, Walorski's district director Zachery Potts, her communications director Emma Thomson, and 56-year-old Edith Schmucker of Nappanee, who was the driver of the other car.

The three were riding in an SUV when Schmucker drove her car across the center divide and collided with their vehicle in a head-on crash at about 12:32 p.m.

Walorski was the top Republican member of the House Ethics Committee as well as the Ways and Means Committee. She was first elected in 2012 to represent Indiana's Second Congressional District and had served three terms in the state's legislature.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is from Indiana, offered words of condolence.

"Our prayers are with her husband Dean, her family, and the families of Zachery Potts and Emma Thomson who also perished in the crash," he wrote. "We're praying God’s comfort over their families and to all who loved and admired this truly inspiring Indiana leader. God Bless Jackie Walorski."
