Whoopi Goldberg apologizes for falsely claiming Turning Point USA embraced neo-Nazis

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of ABC's "The View" on Thursday finally offered an apology for smearing Turning Point USA after she claimed the conservative organization had "embraced" neo-Nazis at its Student Action Summit in Florida over the weekend.

“In Monday’s conversation about Turning Point USA, I put the young people at the conference in the same category as the protesters outside, and I don’t like it when people make assumptions about me and it’s not any better when I make assumptions about other people, which I did," Goldberg said Thursday. "So my bad, I’m sorry.”

The apology comes after Turning Point USA threatened legal action against "The View" demanding that the show retract false statements made by Goldberg on Monday claiming that neo-Nazi protesters were welcomed by the organization, when in fact they were barred from entry to the group's event.

On Monday's show, the co-hosts discussed TPUSA's Student Action Summit and derided the event, likening it to a WWE production. Joy Behar noted that neo-Nazi protesters held a demonstration outside of the venue and criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for speaking at the event but neglected to mention or condemn the protesters.

Later on in the program, Sara Haines read from a legal disclaimer in which TPUSA condemned the neo-Nazis and emphasized "they have nothing to do with our organization."

But Goldberg falsely stated that Turning Point USA had "let them in."

"You let them in and you knew what they were. So you are complicit," she asserted without evidence. She went on to say that TPUSA had "embraced" the neo-Nazi group.

The false claims drew a scathing response from TPUSA, which threatened legal action and gave "The View" a Wednesday deadline to issue a correction and an apology. Haines did so on Wednesday's episode.

"On Monday we talked about the fact that there were openly neo-Nazi demonstrators outside the Florida Student Action Summit of the Turning Point USA group. We want to make clear that these demonstrators were gathered outside the event and that they were not invited or endorsed by Turning Point USA," Haines said.

"A Turning Point USA spokesman said the group ‘100 percent condemns those ideologies’ and said ‘Turning Point USA security tried to remove the neo-Nazis from the area but could not because they were on public property,'" she continued. "Also, Turning Point USA wanted us to clarify that this was a Turning Point USA Summit, and not a Republican Party event. So, we apologize for anything we said that may have been unclear on these points."

But a spokesperson for TPUSA said the organization was dissatisfied with the apology because it was delivered by Haines instead of Goldberg.

Now, Goldberg has apologized.
