The horrific beating of a 67-year-old Asian-American woman was caught by a security camera in New York and police say the suspect used a racial insult during the attack.
The harrowing attack unfolded in Yonkers of Westchester County on Friday evening, according to police.
“This is one of the most appalling attacks I have ever seen,” said Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller. “To beat a helpless woman is despicable, and targeting her because of her race makes it more so.”
Police said that the man yelled a racial insult at the woman as she walked towards the entrance of her apartment building, but she ignored him.
Security video shows the woman walking into the lobby of the building before the man punches her from behind. He brutally stomps and punches her after she falls to the ground.
Police said the attacker punched the victim 125 times, kicked her 7 times, and spit on her twice while using anti-Asian slurs.
Westchester prosecutors said that she suffered bleeding of the brain, facial fractures, and multiple lacerations to the head and face.
Police said that the man yelled incoherently at bystanders until he was arrested outside of the building. They identified him as 42-year-old Tammel Esco.
Esco was initially charged with second-degree assault and second-degree attempted murder for the attack. Prosecutors later elevated both charges to hate crimes. He is being held without bail.
“Hate crimes are beyond intolerable in our city,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “I expect the suspect to be charged to the fullest extent of the law for his heinous actions. I continue to keep the victim and her family in our thoughts and prayers.”
WCBS reported that Esco had 14 arrests on his record, and that he had been convicted of a stabbing in 2010.
Neighbors to the victim told WCBS-TV she was a very nice woman and lived in the building with her two daughters. One man said her husband had died previously and had worked for the post office.
The Yonkers Police Department released video of the entire horrific attack on their official YouTube account.
