What is oxytocin? Barrett Johnson, President of INFO for Families describes it as an incredibly powerful hormone with tremendous influence on the brain. Oxytocin is often labeled the “hug" or “love" hormone. This hormone influences maternal behavior as well as sexual bonding, and is often more prevalent in women than men.
When a woman is intimate with a someone, her body releases oxytocin, which inclines her toward an emotional bond with that person. This might be one of the reasons why we often see girls and women staying in a relationships that appear to be abusive.
After serving in the local church for 25 years, Barrett and his wife Jenifer launched INFO for Families. He has a Master's of Christian Education degree from Southwestern Seminary -- but he and his wife of 27 years have received their best education through the no-holds-barred nature of everyday family life.
"Sex makes you stupid," Barrett joked, then explained how oxytocin bonds us to people even when the relationship conflicts with our values.
