Kamala Harris staffer resigns as 2017 sexual harassment settlement surfaces

A top staffer to Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is out of a job after a sexual harassment lawsuit against him resulted in a $400,000 settlement.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Harris’ former Sacramento office senior adviser, Larry Wallace, resigned his position Wednesday after the newspaper inquired about the hefty payout.

The alleged harassment occurred while Wallace was still working at the Department of Justice under then-Attorney General Harris, and the lawsuit was filed on December 30, 2016, just days before Harris was sworn in as California’s junior senator. The settlement was struck in May 2017.

The lawsuit was brought by Wallace’s former assistant Danielle Hartley.

“While working for Wallace,” the complaint reads, “Hartley had concerns she was being harassed and demeaned due to her gender.”

“This included Wallace placing his printer underneath his desk on the floor and ordering Hartley to put paper in Wallace’s printer or replace the ink on a daily basis,” the lawsuit elaborated. “Hartley requested the printer be moved to another location so she would not have to bend down on her knees under the desk in her dresses and skirts, but Wallace refused.”

Senator Harris’ office has issued a statement: “We were unaware of this issue and take accusations of harassment extremely seriously. This evening, Mr. Wallace offered his resignation to the senator and she accepted it.”
