Canned: CNN Cancels Eliot Spitzer's Show, Announces Lineup Changes

CNN canceled former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's "In the Arena" and announced major changes to its primetime lineup in a news release Wednesday.

Starting Aug. 8, CNN will air "Anderson Cooper 360" at 8 p.m., replacing Spitzer, and will rebroadcast the show during its current 10 p.m. timeslot.

Spitzer's publicist told TV Newser: “We engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging. I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show’s tenure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN.”

The network will premiere a new general news show hosted by Erin Burnett at 7 p.m., pushing "John King USA" back to 6 p.m. and "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. "Piers Morgan Tonight" will continue to air at 9 p.m.

Spitzer joined CNN last October with the premiere of "Parker Spitzer." In February, the show was renamed "In the Arena" when former host Kathleen Parker left the show amid much controversy and "backstage clashes and disagreements."

"In the Arena" has struggled with perennially low ratings, as shown by these numbers from Friday, July 1. (Source: TV Newser)
