Filmmaker Oliver Stone Would Vote for Ron Paul Over Obama

Controversial filmmaker and unabashed liberal Oliver Stone said he would vote for GOP presidential contender Ron Paul over President Obama if he garnered the Republican nomination. Stone suggested that, among the current field of political players, Paul is the "only one" who's "saying anything intelligent about the future of the world."

In an interview with Rock Cellar magazine, Stone was asked if America's economic woes would ultimately lead to the collapse of an “empire.”

“I think it’s a given,” Stone said. “There’s no way that we can continue this spending spree. In fact, I think in many ways the most interesting candidate — I’d even vote for him if he was running against Obama — is Ron Paul. Because he’s the only one of anybody who’s saying anything intelligent about the future of the world.”

Stone, however, who has made no secret about revering far-left figures such as Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Cuba's Fidel Castro, is unlikely to switch allegiances anytime soon.

In 2008 the movie maker wrote an editorial in the Guardian positing that Obama could be the “heir to John F. Kennedy” and he has already contributed to Obama's re-election fund.

According to Federal Election Commission records, that same year, Stone donated $2,300 to the Obama campaign and another $2,300 to the Obama Victory Fund, which raises money for Obama’s re-election as well as for the Democratic National Committee.

Most of Stone's movies contain political -- often left-leaning -- messages critical of conservative leaders and policies. Among his film credits are movies that many argue disparage those on the right while conversely uplifting liberal icons and agendas. Movies about George W. Bush, Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy, and perhaps most glaringly, his critique on "corporate greed" as manifest in the two "Wall Street" installments, perhaps serve as suitable examples.

With such a long history embracing leftists and leftist causes, one wonders why Stone would be supportive of a "Paul for president." Does Stone perhaps see a certain degree of overlap in both his views and Paul's policies? Weigh in below.
