This Is What a 1,320-Pound Blue Marlin Catch Looks Like

"...we had our special day today."

Near Ascension Island, off the coast of Africa in the south Atlantic Ocean, a fisherman's line was hit around 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon earlier this week -- and he battled the fish into sunset.

When the blue marlin caught by Kevin Gardener from the U.K. was officially weighed, it came in at 1,320 pounds. As it was hanging by its tale, its spear-like upper jaw just a few inches off the ground, the heads of the men standing next to it barely reach its dorsal fin.

According to Olaf Grimkowski's Facebook page, who Grind TV said was the boat skipper, the season for marlin in the area was pretty slow.

"[But] it seems to be true that when you have a long hard time you are saving up for something special," he wrote on February 19. "Well we had our special day today."

"In the distance we saw her lunging and she looked [promising]," he wrote of the fish when it hit the line. "After [three] surface runs she went a bit deeper and for the last 90 minutes Kevin fought her on sunset."

The Grind TV explained a bit more:

Gardner got the fish to the boat four times and four times wireman Emil Ruud had to let go of the leader. Finally, after three hours, Ruud, wiring his first marlin, managed to leader the fish, and it was gaffed.

All in all, the marlin's shortlength was measured at 149 inches and girth was 83 inches.

According to Grind TV, this marlin is said to be the second largest caught off the island by 17 pounds. The IGFA world record for Atlantic blue marlin is 1,402, which was caught near Brazil in 1992.
