Poll: Obama approval drops 8 points in 1 month

It was only a matter of time -- juggling multiple scandals tends to have this effect on politicians:

President Obama’s approval rating has plummeted to 45 percent amid a series of controversies in recent weeks, according to a poll released Monday.

A new CNN/ORC International survey found that Obama’s approval rating has fallen eight percentage points in the past month, as revelations about U.S. surveillance programs, the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups, and the secret monitoring of journalists by the Department of Justice dominate headlines. They represent Obama’s lowest marks in the poll during the past year and a half — and a steep decline from his 53 percent approval rating just last month.

Perhaps even more troubling for the president, half of those surveyed said they no longer find him “honest or trustworthy.”

And such sentiment is extending into Obama’s own political base.

“The drop in Obama’s support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point decline over the past month among people under 30, who, along with black Americans, had been the most loyal part of the Obama coalition,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

The CNN/ORC survey polled 1,000 American adults.  Rasmussen's daily presidential tracking poll finds a similar trend among likely voters:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 47% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Obama's job performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) now disapprove.

Today’s figures include 21% who Strongly Approve of the way Obama is performing as president and 40% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -19 (see trends). That matches yesterday for the lowest Approval Index rating in nine months.
