Boehner to House Republicans: We'll Do an Immigration Bill That 'Reflects the Will of Our Majority

"And the people we represent.”

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told congressional Republicans again Wednesday morning that the House will vote on an immigration bill that reflects the will of the GOP.

“Weeks ago, I — along with Eric, Kevin, Cathy and Bob Goodlatte — issued a statement making clear that the House is not going to just take up and vote on whatever the Senate passes,” Boehner told lawmakers in a closed-door meeting, Roll Call reported. ”We’ll do our own bill, through regular order and it’ll be a bill that reflects the will of our majority and the people we represent.”

Boehner was referring to House Republican leadership members including Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).

The speaker has faced public opposition from members of his caucus who have been sounding the alarm over a bill they say will amount to amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Boehner said last week he would not bring forward any immigration legislation that does not have majority Republican support, but didn't rule out allowing a House-Senate compromise to come to the floor.

Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert, one of the Republicans leading the immigration bill opposition, told TheBlaze last week Boehner was "not promising not to bring a conference report that has amnesty — he’s not promising not to bring that to the floor."
