President Barack Obama was caught on a "hot mic" on Monday making a joke about quitting smoking at his wife's expense.

During a light-hearted conversation with Maina Kiai, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, in New York, Obama revealed why he hasn't had a cigarette in years.

"No, no," Obama replied after he told the UN official he hoped he had quit smoking. "I haven't had a cigarette in probably six years. That's because I'm scared of my wife."

Though some wives and significant others are more lenient when it comes to such jokes, others aren't amused at being depicted as the "scary" wife.

"Be careful with those open microphones," CNN's Wolf Blitzer said after airing the video. That's good advice.

As The Hill points out, First Lady Michelle Obama told iVillage last year that Obama's daughters insisted their father quit smoking.

"They are at the age now where you can't hide, it's clear," she said in the interview. "He would have to start having those conversations because we discuss all the time ... we talk about drugs. We talk about sex. We talk about smoking. We talk about it all."
