Female Shopkeeper Uses Unlikely Items Fight Off a Machete-Wielding Thug

“They were extremely brave and stayed calm..."

A would-be thief in England who demanded cash from two female shopkeepers and threatened them with a machete and kitchen knife if they didn't comply probably didn't expect the response he got.

With a blade reportedly inches away from one shopkeeper's face, not only did she refuse to hand the money over, she fought him off to protect herself and her coworker.

How?

Using a mop and a bottle of vodka, police say.

Once the hooded intruder was caught by surprise, the shopkeeper sounded the alarm in the Blackpool, England, store about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Blackpool Gazette reported. (Blackpool is a western coastal city about an hour north of the Beatles' old haunt, Liverpool.)

The thug fled the premises empty-handed, police added.

“I would like to commend staff at the store for keeping calm in what can only be described as a traumatic experience," Barron Moseley of the Blackpool Criminal Investigation Department said. “They were extremely brave and stayed calm in such a harrowing experience and their actions have prevented them or any customers from being injured or worse."

A store spokesman told the Gazette that the staff, while unharmed, were left “very shaken” by the incident.

Blackpool police described the attacker as white, clean shaven, 6'2'' tall, slim to medium build, wearing a grey hooded top with the hood up, and about 28 years old.
