LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado hospital says Claire Davis, 17, has died more than a week after being shot in the head by a classmate who then killed himself.
Davis had been in critical condition after being shot at point-blank range at Arapahoe High School in suburban Denver on Dec. 13.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson says Davis appeared to be a random target.
Friends and well-wishers had been posting prayers online and raising money to help pay for her medical care.
Hundreds of Arapahoe High School students gathered for a candlelight vigil Saturday night, Dec. 14, 2013, to share their prayers for Claire Davis who was shot inside the school Friday, Dec. 13, 2013. The vigil was held at Arapaho Park in Centennial, not far from the school. (Image source: AP/The Denver Post, Karl Gehring)
Authorities say 18-year-old Karl Pierson, who entered the school armed with a shotgun, a machete and three Molotov cocktails, was likely targeting a librarian who had disciplined him. Robinson says Pierson shot Davis before killing himself. The librarian escaped the school unharmed.
