Don't Watch This Video If You Have a Fear of Elevators

A Chilean man was terrified when the elevator he was in began speeding upward with the doors open in a building over the weekend. After a few seconds without slowing, the lift hit the top floor of the building, injuring the man in the process.

According to an unofficial translation of a report from BiobioChile about the incident, the out-of-control elevator shot up 30 floors within 20 seconds, going up to 50 mph. The man inside at the time, identified as Jose Vergara Acevedo, sustained injuries to his head and was transferred to the hospital by rescue crews.

The cause of the malfunction was not identified at the time of BiobioChile's report.

Someone claiming to be an elevator technician on Reddit though said they've seen this type of issue before.

"I think it's a very rare combination of faults in the safety circuit and a malfunction in the brake on the motor, nothing to stop the counterweight from shooting down the shaft and conversely slamming the lift into the ceiling. A lot of things have to go wrong before this happens," the Redditor going by symo420 wrote.
