The Air Force personnel were washed out to sea, NBC reported, from the northeast shore of Okinawa around 3:45 p.m. local time.

The local coast guard reportedly found one body two hours later (around 5 a.m. EDT), but the U.S. military did not immediately confirm whether the body was that of an airman.

The incident occurred after the eye of the typhoon had passed through Okinawa, home to the American Kadena Air Base.
