Suspect Tests a Mom's Protective Instincts and Learns the Hard Way: 'I Have My Daughter to Protect

"We’ve talked about what we would do. Protect her, protect the house. That’s what I did."

A mother in Newport News, Virginia, was faced with her “worst fear” on Wednesday night when a man broke into her home while she was alone with her baby daughter. Unfortunately for the suspect, the woman’s husband is a police officer and been preparing her for such a situation for years.

The mom, identified as Allie by WTKR-TV, said she knew it “was either him or me.”

“I have my daughter to protect,” she said.

And she did just that. When the suspect forced his way into the front door and started “coming at” her, Allie opened fire, sending the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Prior to the shooting, Allie was startled by the sound of someone banging on the door and “messing with the door knob.” She didn’t recognize the man so the mother said she immediately “latched the top lock, ran to the back, called 911 and got my gun.”

Her handling of the situation is the result of the training and preparing she has done with her police officer husband.

“We’ve talked about what we would do. Protect her, protect the house. That’s what I did,” she told WTKR-TV, adding, “All I knew is I wanted to stop him from hurting me or hurting my daughter.”

When the suspect was inside the home and going after her, Allie said she shot the intruder two times. One of the bullets went through his hand and into his stomach and the other struck his groin.

Police plan to arrest and charge the 25-year-old suspect when he is discharged from the hospital.
