Boy, Were We Wrong': New Hampshire Newspaper That Endorsed Christie Changes Course After He Stumps With Trump

In November, the New Hampshire Union Leader threw their much-coveted endorsement behind New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as he sought the Republican presidential nomination.

Now, the venerable newspaper has published a new editorial ahead of Super Tuesday in which it claims, "Boy, were we wrong."

The editorial, written by publisher Joseph McQuaid, comes as Christie has dedicated his time following the end of his candidacy to stumping for businessmen Donald Trump.

McQuaid wrote:

Despite his baggage, we thought that as a Republican governor in a Democratic-leading state he had the skills and experience the presidency needs (and hasn’t had of late). We also thought he had the best chance to take on and face down Donald Trump.

Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend — and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency — demonstrated how wrong we were. Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.

The piece also said that Christie told the newspaper "specifically" that he would never endorse Trump in the event that he ends his presidential candidacy.

"Voters here apparently knew better than we," the editorial said. "Most rejected Christie but divided their votes among several others, leaving Trump to claim victory."

McQuaid continued, "If nothing else, that might wake up some Trump fans. We will look for that, just as soon as we get the egg off our face."

Trump is leading among his fellow GOP candidates ahead of Super Tuesday, according to Real Clear Politics aggregated polling data.
