Orlando Massacre Gunman Called Friend to Say Goodbye, TV Station During Attack: Officials

That friend is currently being interviewed by police.

The gunman who killed 49 people and wounded more than 50 others at a gay nightclub in Orlando made at least two more phone calls during his attack that were not to 911, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

Omar Mateen called a friend as he was carrying out the mass shooting — to say goodbye — two law enforcement officials told CNN.

That friend is currently being interviewed by police.

Mateen also called a producer at the television station News 13 Orlando, as well as 911, taking credit for the massacre and pledging allegiance to the Islamic State.

Also Tuesday, more details emerged about Mateen's wife, who officials believe had gone with the shooter to buy ammunition for Sunday's attack — and may have had advance warning of his intentions.
