Police said the trio, thought to be from Pennsylvania, was stopped for having a cracked windshield. Police then searched the vehicle and found the weapons, along with a camouflage helmet and night-vision goggles, WNBC-TV reported.
The suspects have no known connection to terrorists and police said there is no risk to the country's largest metropolitan area.
An investigation is underway.
