Former CIA Counterterrorism Agent to Launch Independent Conservative Campaign for President

"It’s never too late to do the right thing."

An independent conservative candidate will launch a bid for president Monday.

Evan McMullin, a former CIA counterterrorism agent and the chief policy director of the House Republican conference, told ABC News that “in a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up."

"It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us,” McMullin said. “I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President.”

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough was first to report the news Monday on Twitter, citing sources, that McMullin was running.

Scarborough, a former GOP congressman from Florida, also tweeted that the candidate "has an impressive resume and the backing of key $$ contributors in the Republican Party."

According to Politico, McMullin has never held elected office. Following an 11-year career at the CIA, he briefly worked at Goldman Sachs.

Like his potential Republican rival Trump, McMullin studied at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

McMullin has frequently characterized Trump as an “authoritarian” on Twitter.

“Sources said McMullin was planning to file his paperwork [to run for president] Monday at around noon,” Buzzfeed reported.
