92-year-old mom allegedly shoots and kills son who wanted to put her in a nursing home

Arizona police arrested a 92-year-old woman earlier this week who allegedly shot and killed her son for wanting to move her into a nursing home, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Anna Mae Blessing was found sitting in a recliner when the police arrived at their home. She reportedly told officers that her 72-year-old son had accused her of becoming "difficult to live with."

"According to statements provided by suspect Blessing and received by the detectives, she had been contemplating for several days her son’s intentions to place her in an assisted living facility," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

"You ended my life, so I'm taking yours," the elderly woman allegedly stated during her arrest, KNXV-TV reported.

What's the story?

On Monday at about 10 a.m., authorities responded to an "unknown trouble" call in Fountain Hills.

The woman reportedly hid two handguns in the pockets of her bathrobe and walked into her son's bedroom where she confronted him.

According to authorities, Blessing told the deputies that she pulled out her gun and fired multiple rounds at her son and killed him. Then the woman reportedly pointed the gun at her son's girlfriend who was also in the room.

"[T]he two struggled over the weapon when it was dislodged from Blessing's hand," authorities said.

Blessing reportedly grabbed the second gun and attempted to point it at the girlfriend, who knocked it from the woman's possession.

Finally, the girlfriend called the police.

Was there a history of family violence?

Police had been called to the home in the past over verbal disputes, according to court documents, the news station reported.

What did the woman's family say?

Barbara Blessing, the deceased man's daughter, said that her father had tried to have the woman's guns taken away from her, but police said she had a right to have them.

"All I want to do is get her out of that jail where she can have her dignity back and so she can get on the medication she needs so she can rest in peace," Barbara Blessing told KNXV. "She doesn't deserve to be treated like this, she's not well, she's very ill."

What are the charges?

Police charged Blessing with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. It's not immediately clear whether the woman will be released on bond.
