How sick!' - Mika Brzezinski slams Ivanka for thanking Trump on ending family separation

Mika Brzezinski, one of the hosts on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," criticized Ivanka Trump Friday and others for congratulating President Donald Trump for ending migrant family separation, and called it a "trick" on the American people.

Here's what she said

Brzezinski was responding to a video of a migrant woman from Guatemala who had been reunited with her 8-year-old child, and she criticized the president's daughter for thanking him for ending the policy Brzezinski accused him of implementing.

"There's the sad, I think incredibly damaging trick the Trump administration has played on the American people," Brzezinski said. "Because for some reason some people who work for President Trump, including his daughter, are twisting this and actually thanking President Trump for moments like this, moments he created, how sick!"

"How sick for someone in the White House to tweet thank you to Donald Trump for these reunions," she added. "Because these reunions, they should have never happened. These children should have never been taken away from their parents."

Brzezinski was referring to a tweet where Ivanka Trump thanked her father for ending the family separation policy in June.

"Thank you @POTUS for taking critical action ending family separation at our border," she tweeted.

"Congress must now act + find a lasting solution that is consistent with our shared values;the same values that so many come here seeking as they endeavor to create a better life for their families," Ivanka Trump added.

"How utterly sick!" Brzezinski continued. "This is not where we need to be. And at some point I pray all Americans get it. But I get when I see what happened at this rally last night, the people clapping when they're hearing lies, I get that all of you are part of creating a big lie for this presidency and protecting something that is utterly un-American."

Joe compares Trump to Kim Jong Un

"We're talking about Ivanka Trump congratulating her father for ending a policy that he started," Joe Scarborough claimed, "that caused so much human misery it's kinda like Donald Trump thanking Kim Jong Un for releasing Americans that Kim Jong Un kidnapped!"

"It's like you're thanking the person that created the policy that created the pain and human suffering," he continued, "for reversing that policy, for trying to fix a situation that they created out of the most base, cynical, political motives."

"Donald Trump of course, having our government snatch babies from their mother's arms," Scarborough explained, "...as a bargaining chip for Democrats."

The debate rages on

Defenders of the president's policies point out that family separation was a consequence of laws put into practice long before his election, and that many such separations occurred under previous presidents as well.

Critics of the president counter that Trump's "zero tolerance" policies led to an increased rate of family separations, and that administration officials were praising the deterrent effect of those policies before the public outcry.

Anger and frustration over images and videos from these policies have spurred the "Abolish ICE" movement, but more centrist Democrats have avoided the far left proposed remedy.
