Sam Bankman-Fried wins approval to get 'uninterrupted access' to Adderall while in jail

Former cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried had a letter written on his behalf by his legal team to gain access to Adderrall while he is in jail awaiting trial.

Attorney Mark Cohen wrote a letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan and asked for Bankman-Fried to have "uninterrupted access to his daily prescribed medications while he is detained" at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The letter detailed that Bankman-Fried has received psychiatric care and as a result was prescribed Adderall for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.

“For over five years Mr. Bankman-Fried has been prescribed Emsam 9mg/24 hrs transdermal patch for the treatment of depression, and for the past three years, Mr. Bankman-Fried has been prescribed Adderall 10mg tablets, 3-4x/day for the treatment of ADHD," Cohen wrote.

"Without these medications, Mr. Bankman-Fried will experience a return of his depression and ADHD symptoms, which will severely impact his ability to assist in his own defense," the letter claimed.

Judge Kaplan approved the motion within the same day.

This came just days after Kaplan sided with federal prosecutors and revoked bail from the former FTX boss. His bail conditions allowed him to be on house arrest at his parents' home, but prosecutors argued that he tampered with witnesses.

Prosecutors alleged that Bankman-Fried made over 1,000 phone calls to reporters along with having sent over 100 emails to the media ahead of his trial. In one instance, he allegedly leaked pages from the private diary of his girlfriend Caroline Ellison to the New York Times in an attempt to discredit her testimony.

“I have been feeling pretty unhappy and overwhelmed with my job,” an alleged diary entry from February 2022 read. “At the end of the day I can’t wait to go home and turn off my phone and have a drink and get away from it all," she added, according to CNBC.

Ellison pleaded guilty to federal charges in December 2022 and has cooperated with government authorities. She is expected to be a star witness in the upcoming trial.

Despite Bankman-Fried being held in the infamous MDC jail in Brooklyn, New York, the government has requested that he be sent to a jail in Putnam, New York, in order to have access to a laptop with internet access to prepare his defense.
