Developing: 4 found dead in Maine home linked to nearby highway shooting, police say

Police have detained a person of interest believed to be connected with four people found dead in a home in Bowdoin, Maine, and three more shot along a highway about 25 miles away, WMTW reported Tuesday.

"State police responded to an address in Bowdoin, where they found four people deceased within the home," Lt. Randall Keaten of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit told reporters.

"Shortly after that, at 10:30 [a.m.] we had reports of several vehicles being hit by gunfire between mile marker 17 on I-295 [southbound] and exit 15."

Officials say they detained one person of interest, the incidents in Bowdoin and Yarmouth are connected, and there is no risk to the public at this time.

Police did not provide information on how or why they believe the separate crimes are connected.

Of the three people reportedly shot while driving their vehicles on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, one was seriously injured and is in critical condition. All three were taken to the hospital.

Police recovered a firearm from the scene of the highway shooting, according to a post from the Town of Yarmouth's Facebook page.

WGME reporter Owen Kingley shared footage of an MSP Evidence Response Team truck outside the the home at 1459 Augusta Road in Bowdoin where four bodies were found earlier in the day.

Investigators told the outlet the bodies were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Maine's capital, for autopsies.

"We are confident that there is no imminent threat to the general public at this time," Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry told CBS News. Sheriff Merry's deputies were assisting in Bowdoin.

Yarmouth is a community of about 9,000 people about 11.5 miles north of Portland along I-295. Bowdoin is town of about 3,100 people about 25 miles northeast of Yarmouth along the same interstate.
