Bronx dad gets 12 years for death of 6-week-old son, threw newborn on ground because the baby was crying: DA

A New York City father was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally throwing his newborn baby to the ground. Christian Rodriguez, 27, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his 6-week-old son, reported WPIX.

In 2019, Rodriguez purportedly threw the month-old baby to the ground after the 38-day-old newborn baby named "Aiden" wouldn't stop crying.

Initially, Rodriguez told law enforcement investigators that he accidentally hit the baby's head on a bedroom door frame. Rodriquez said he was “trying to maneuver the stroller into the bedroom [when] Aiden hit his head against the door frame."

Rodriguez later admitted, "I got angry and threw Aiden to the ground face first. I got frustrated and threw him to the ground," Rodriguez said, according to the criminal complaint.

At that time of the incident, the father and son had just arrived at their Bronx home from the nearby apartment of the baby's grandmother.

Aiden had no pulse when he arrived at the Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.

A CAT scan revealed the baby had suffered several fractures in his skull, multiple brain bleeds, an acute subdural hemorrhage, a scattered left acute subarachnoid hemorrhage, bruising to both sides of his head, and "a 3-millimeter midline shift of the child's brain," according to court papers.

Aiden Rodriguez died from the injuries, and his cause of death was from abusive head trauma.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said, "The defendant’s newborn was crying and instead of comforting him, the defendant threw him to the ground, ending his life. The defendant’s violence is unconscionable and unfitting of any parent."

Rodriguez faces five years of post-release supervision after his 12-year prison sentence.

The father of four was involved in previous incident with a different child. In 2015, Rodriguez pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge involving one of his children when the 3-month-old baby suffered two black eyes, said prosecutor Astrid Borgstedt. The infant suffered bruising and swelling around her face and nose.
