California couple charged with stealing $17,000 worth of merchandise from two Target locations

A couple in California have been charged with theft after the authorities claim they took $17,000 worth of merchandise from two Target locations in Orange County.

The Irvine Police Department identified Analu Gonzalez, 25, and Alexis De Jesus Garcia, 22, as the two charged in connection with stealing from a Target in Costa Mesa on March 3 and a second Target location on April 2, according to Fox News.

The police department released footage of what appears to be the alleged thefts.

The Irvine Police Department took to Instagram following the incident, humorously writing: "#GAMEOVER - Bowser and his partner in crime, Buzzy Beatle, collected baby formula from stores across Orange County like Mario and Luigi collect coins."

The video shows the two at the Costa Mesa store, pushing a cart toward the aisle with expensive baby formula. And a child can be seen sitting in the seat portion of the cart.

Shortly after, they can be seen stuffing items into a large tote bag indiscriminately.

The footage appears to show a Target employee trying to intervene, but the couple proceed to exit the store without seeming to be bothered.

"Their high score reached $17,000 in stolen goods when our Detectives located them at a motel in Buena Park yesterday," the police statement said, per Fox News. "In case you’re curious, they were not stealing the formula to feed their Koopalings."

The couple decided to try their luck at a second Target location in Irvine. They walked into the Irvine location and rolled a shopping cart to the baby formula aisle. Then they started throwing products from the shelves into the cart, per the report.

The two apparently stole an estimated $3,000 worth of merchandise from the Irvine location, according to police. They were both arrested on Thursday for grand theft and organized retail theft.

Theft appears to be a growing crime across the country. Last month, a flash mob in Los Angeles stormed a mall, with over 30 people stealing more than $300,000 worth of items.

Glenn Beck said on his show: "Nobody’s stopping them."

“If I didn’t have, you know, my own moral compass, and I knew they couldn’t do anything, and I needed a screwdriver, why wouldn’t I just walk in and just grab the screwdriver and walk out?” he added.
