Someone posted video of a stray dog carrying a severed arm in its mouth in Jackson, Mississippi, and police found pieces of a decapitated body for the next three days.
Police said they responded to a report on Saturday of a dog carrying a human body part and investigated the area, searching for the rest of the body.
The graphic video was posted to social media and showed what appeared to be a German shepherd.
Investigators said they found human remains in the wooded area behind a home on Sunday, and then more remains were found on Monday in the backyard of an abandoned home. As of Tuesday, police said that they had not yet found the head that belonged to the body.
"We're still investigating; we're still looking for remains," said Jackson Police Dept. Commander Abraham Thompson to WAPT-TV.
Thompson was asked about the bizarre nature of the incident.
"Well, I would say, that the individual that's responsible for it, we most definitely want to find out where his or her head was, we want to know what they were thinking," he responded.
The Hinds County coroner later identified the victim as 54-year-old Scott Allen Tyler, a white male. Police said there is an ongoing murder investigation.
Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba reacted to the investigation during his media briefing on Monday.
"That is a very graphic and brutal picture. The mutilation of a body, my reaction is one of disgust, is one of concern," Lumumba said. "It’s not something you grow accustomed to - it’s never something you want to grow accustomed to."
WAPT reported that the death of Tyler was the 117th murder in Jackson so far in 2022. The city has a population of about 150,000 residents.
