First act by interim speaker of the House is to evict Nancy Pelosi from hideaway office: 'The room will be re-keyed'

The first act of the interim speaker of the House of Representatives was to order Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to vacate her hideaway office that she had refused to leave under the former speaker.

Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as speaker on Tuesday after several Republicans joined with Democrats to push him out. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) assumed the speakership temporarily and issued the order against Pelosi hours later.

“Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed,” read the email to Pelosi, according to Politico. The email indicated that the office would be used for "speaker office use."

Pelosi lambasted the order in a statement issued by her office.

“With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol,” read the statement.

“This eviction is a sharp departure from tradition,” she added. “As Speaker, I gave former Speaker Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished.”

Pelosi was away from Capitol Hill in order to attend the funeral of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who died at the age of 90.

“Sadly, because I am in California to mourn the loss of and pay tribute to my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am unable to retrieve my belongings at this time,” she said.

A spokesperson for Pelosi said that the staff for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York was helping move Pelosi's items from the hideaway office.

McCarthy was voted the 55th speaker of the House in January. He was ousted on a vote of 216 to 210.
