Pregnant woman was beaten and run over by carjackers who drove off with her 2-year-old boy in a child seat

A pregnant woman was seriously injured when she was run over by carjackers who ran off in her car with her 2-year-old boy in a child seat.

The harrowing incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon in the city of Libertyville, Illinois, at about 3:30 p.m.

The 34-year-old woman was returning to her home and had gone to take one of her children inside when she returned to the car for her other child and found a man trying to steal the car. When she confronted him, he knocked her to the ground.

Police said the man drove away with her car along with another man in a white BMW, but they ran over the woman as they fled the scene. The woman, who is six months pregnant, sustained serious injuries but was able to call 911.

Police said that 15 minutes later, they responded to a report of men driving two vehicles, abandoning a child at a business about eight miles away. They quickly determined that it was the same boy that was kidnapped by the carjackers. They said he was uninjured and reunited with his family.

The Lake County Sheriff's office said in a release that the Volkswagen Car-Net tracking system would not help them unless they paid for the service.

"Unfortunately, there was a delay, as Volkswagen Car-Net would not track the vehicle with the abducted child until they received payment to reactivate the tracking device in the stolen Volkswagen," read the statement.

Volkswagen later said in a statement that there had been a "serious breach of the process" that led to the mix-up.

Police determined that the white BMW driven by the carjackers had been previously stolen from a car dealership.

The woman was hospitalized at the Advocate Condell Medical Center with injuries to her extremities. She was listed in serious but stable condition.

Police are asking for help from the public in identifying the two men.
