Markwayne Mullin accuses Matt Gaetz of 'living off your daddy's money'

Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma engaged in a hostile exchange on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

When retweeting a post suggesting that Mullin's net worth had ballooned from 2018 to 2022, Gaetz commented, "We should pass a ban on trading stocks!"

Mullin suggested that Gaetz is living off of his father's money. "I hear @RepMattGaetz has criticism of hard-earned success — he should try building a business that gains value, it’s more gratifying than living off your daddy's money," Mullin tweeted.

Gaetz replied to Mullin's tweet by sharing the graphic about his net worth.

"The only thing I criticized were your stock trades while a member of congress. I want to ban those trades. You cashed in and made millions," Gaetz also responded.

Mullin, who began serving as a senator earlier this year, had previously served in the House of Representatives.

The senator had appeared prepared to get into a physical altercation with a witness at a hearing last month, though no fight actually occurred.

Gaetz successfully moved to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the House speakership earlier this year, leading Republicans to embark on a lengthy process to tap a new speaker.
