Meghan Markle podcast dropped by Spotify, ex-royal couple will lose full payout over lack of content: Report

Meghan Markle's podcast on Spotify will not be renewed for a second season, as the streaming giant reportedly plans to change its output, according to the Daily Mail.

Markle's show "Archetypes" is a podcast that is meant to "investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back," according to its Spotify description.

Despite a reported $20 million deal with Spotify, the Wall Street Journal reported that Markle and Prince Harry did not meet the productivity benchmark that would allow them to receive a full payout, as this was the only project that the duo completed for Spotify.

Markle's podcast featured just 12 episodes, which aired from August to November 2022. In September 2022, only one episode was posted. Titles included "Upending the 'Angry Black Woman' Myth'" and "Breaking Down 'The Bimbo.'"

"The team behind Archetypes remain proud of the podcast they created at Spotify. Meghan is continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform," management company WME told the Wall Street Journal.

The ousted royal has reportedly considered partnering with Gwyneth Paltrow's website Goop, a platform valued at over $200 million, to host a wellness and lifestyle blog.

The famous couple has had a tumultuous time since landing in the United States. In February 2023, an episode of "South Park" was taken so seriously by Markle that she reportedly spent days being "upset and overwhelmed." The cartoon mocked them as constantly seeking attention despite claiming to want privacy.

In mid-May 2023, the couple claimed they narrowly escaped a "catastrophic" car chase. A statement said they "were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi," after which the couple demanded that photographers turn over their images.

"We hereby demand that Backgrid immediately provide us with copies of all photos, videos, and/or films taken last night by the freelance photographers after the couple left their event and over the next several hours," a letter said, according to TMZ.

Attorneys for Backgrid responded by saying, "In America, as I'm sure you know, property belongs to the owner of it: Third parties cannot just demand it be given to them, as perhaps Kings can do."

Comedian Tim Dillon also said in early June 2022 that the two are "low-grade reality stars" who are "trying to attach to anything."

Additionally, Spotify has announced it will be releasing approximately 200 employees, or 2% of its workforce.
