NBC News contributor appears to suggest in now-deleted tweet that Daily Wire to blame for mass murder at Nashville church school

A journalist who has contributed to NBC News as well as the New York Times, Reuters, and the Washington Post appeared to suggest in now-deleted tweet that conservative news outlet the Daily Wire is to blame for Monday's mass killing at a Nashville church school.

What are the details?

Benjamin Ryan, a health and science reporter, posted the tweet Monday, the New York Post reported.

Ryan tweeted that the shooter was "transgender and had no previous criminal record" — and added in the following sentence that "Nashville is home to the Daily Wire, a hub of anti-trans activity," while naming Daily Wire commentators Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro, and Michael Knowles, the paper said.

Ryan, according to the New York Post, implied in his tweet that the shooter "was motivated to carry out the mass shooting" since Nashville also is where the Daily Wire is headquartered.

He also may have been pointing toward recently enacted Tennessee laws banning drag shows outside age-restricted venues and banning puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and gender-related surgeries for children.

The paper said Ryan soon deleted the tweet in the face of backlash — but here's a screenshot of it.

In addition, OutKick reported that Ryan soon scrubbed his Twitter bio of his affiliation with the Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News along with his status as a "health and science reporter" and his coverage subjects of COVID, HIV, and the monkeypox virus.

How are folks reacting?

Here's what some Twitter users have written about Ryan's now-deleted tweet:

  • "Stop hiding dawg, own your mistake," one commenter wrote. "You blatantly editorialized a headline for political points."
  • "It's this s**t right here that's making these mentally unstable Rainbow Mafia kooks' cheese slide off their crackers and go postal," another user said.
  • "[Ryan] doesn’t care about the victims; he is excited that he can somehow try to tie a cold-blooded [murder] to something nebulous," another commenter opined. "When is Benny writing about the encouraged & brave planned Trans Day of Rage & Violence? Not the right kind of terrorist? Not his narrative?"
  • "Benjamin Ryan, why did you delete your tweet[?]" another commenter wondered. "Do you not stand by your convictions, or are you simply a coward? The trans lunatic targeted innocent children at a Christian church."

Anything else?

The New York Post said it reached out to NBC News and Ryan seeking comment as well as to the Daily Wire for a reaction.
