San Diego 'teacher of the year' re-arrested for 14 additional charges, including child porn possession and sexual exploitation of a child

A teacher who had been celebrated as the teacher of the year in San Diego County was re-arrested on additional charges after she was initially arrested for numerous incidents of alleged child sex abuse.

Sixth-grade teacher Jacqueline Ma was first arrested on Tuesday for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with one of her former students at Lincoln Acres Elementary School. She bailed out of jail for $100,000.

After further police investigation, the 34-year-old was re-arrested and taken into custody on Thursday afternoon, as first reported by KSWB-TV.

She was facing six felony charges, but prosecutors added an additional 14 charges. The additional charges consist of seven counts of possession of child pornography, four counts of sexual exploitation of a child, two counts of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14, and one count of witness tampering.

The original charges came about when a parent contacted the National City police on Monday about a suspected inappropriate relationship with their 13-year-old child. Those six charges include lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under 14 years and three counts of oral copulation with a minor under the age of 14 years.

KSWB reported that there was not an updated bail amount for Ma over the additional charges.

Ma was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility for the second time in a week.

The district's superintendent, Leighangela Brady, released a statement about the charges.

"While this entire situation is indeed deeply troubling, we appreciate that law enforcement is dedicating resources to secure the facts and keeping our school district and community informed of their progress," wrote Brady. "I want to confirm to our school community that the employee is on leave and will not be returning to the campus."

Ma was named as one of five teachers of the year for 2022-2023.
