Tucker Carlson's prime-time slot to be filled by Will Cain for now

Co-host of Fox News' "Fox & Friends Weekend" Will Cain is the next host to fill Tucker Carlson's vacant prime-time slot at 8 p.m., according to the Wrap.

Fox News has taken recent hits to its ratings since Carlson's departure, finally falling to second place behind CNN during Donald Trump's town hall on the liberal network.

The program in the coveted 8 p.m. time slot drew in an audience of 3.12 million viewers for CNN, while Fox saw just 1.412 million.

Cain, who has become a staple at Fox News and often filled in for Carlson in his absence, is the fourth host to enter the vacant space left by "Tucker Carlson Tonight." Brian Kilmeade, Lawrence Jones, and former Trump White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany have all taken turns before him.

Cain currently co-hosts "Fox & Friends Weekend" with Rachel Campos-Duffy and Pete Hegseth from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

"It's a tremendous mistake," BlazeTV contributor John Doyle said of the rotating replacements.

"Tucker Carlson could fill and expand Bill O'Reilly's slot in terms of market share viewership, which was in itself seemingly impossible at the time 'Tucker Carlson Tonight' began airing," Doyle continued. "But nobody will ever be able to fill Tucker's shoes, let alone outgrow them. That doesn't mean that his replacement won't be good, just that Tucker is in a league of his own."

Fox's 8 p.m. programming has secured around 1.5 million nightly viewers, about half of what Carlson drew in. The network has often dropped behind MSNBC's “All In with Chris Hayes," according to the Wrap, a notion that was unheard-of during Carlson's days with the network.

In the interim, attacks on Fox News have come from several angles.

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh said the outlet "continues to promote radical left wing gender ideology by referring to men as 'she.'"

"This is not even a remotely conservative media outlet. They have long since adopted the most extreme and absurd positions of the left," Walsh added.

At the same time, Media Matters released a series of somewhat unflattering, but overall ineffective and non-damaging leaked videos of Carlson bantering with various people in preparation for his show.

A permanent host to replace Carlson has not yet been announced, nor has there been any indication that the network is in talks with a would-be replacement.
